Week 3
Week covers some techniques on how for study. One of the techniques I need to improve on is memory. I learned this week that there were 3 styles when it comes to memory techniques. Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic learners. Personally I've been doing and using Kinaesthetic style without knowing about it. It is a style where I learn effectively through practice and explicit work. I tend to forget the topics I learn within a week or two and it is hard to retain certain knowledge when I do the visual and auditory style. This is the reason why I must improve this memory study techniques. Through Kinaesthetic style I can easily memorize or retain knowledge especially if it became a habit. For example when I was first learning how to program, I struggle writing loops in C++ class. But through writing for loops and while loops almost everyday, from writing on paper or typing on keyboard, it became a routine for me and innately builtin to my brain on how they need to be written. Another study techniques I need to improve on is the stress reduction tips. I believe for me this is an important one because without proper mental health, learning/studying would even be more harder. One technique in particular is overcoming anxiety. For me it is hard not to overthink about the future when I am bombarded with work, school, life tasks. I would feel anxious if I get behind schedule or miss something important in my life because of different commitments. I need to handle better my anxiety/stress so that I don't overthink as I get easily distracted when I overthink. I learn how to handle anxiety by practicing different relaxation techniques through meditation. I also learn a general stress reduction tips such as avoiding procrastinating and get things done as early as possible so the work doesn't pile up.
Week 3 also discuss about AI. In particular the ethics surrounding AI. As much as it benefits society with advancement tools, AI can be a double edge sword that can also harm humans. AI is particularly new so we are just starting to find out the possible harms and ethics dilemma that it brings. I learn from ACM code of ethics site that we, as professionals, are responsible for developing an AI that benefits the society while avoiding the harm that it brings as much as possible. Ethics in AI development is mandatory and should not be optional. It was clear from the video "Ethics in the Age if AI" that people are still 50/50 with how AI should be used in film industry. The main dilemma it talked about is if AI will change how to be human. I believe that AI will now replace humanity but we should be careful on how we use it. AI is a tool not something that change how to be a human. As long as it is used and develop properly with cautious, I think society will thrive with such a powerful and people will need to adapt to the change it is making. As Mustafa Suleyman mention in his tad talk we need to have courage to face the harm of LLM in order to progress. And I believe this is achievable by the help of government, developers and society as general.
This week also discuss on what a computer science major should aim to learn and know. Earning bachelor degree in computer science is not enough to progress in this field. Computer science major should aim to build more foundation beyond to just typing/creating codes. I learn that it is important to have project portfolio rather than just have a resume. Portfolio showcase more the capability of a person rather than just a resume. The article also emphasize on learning different languages and one should at learn how to code in a compiler language. We as computer science major should also learn math to improve our technical skills such as data structures & algorithms, calculus and discrete mathematics. We also need to learn more about networking, security databases and software engineering. Not only that we have to have some sort of experience in using tools like version control system such as GIT and be able to navigate in a Unix-style environments. Overall the goal is to be a well rounded computer science major in order to adapt to changes as technology moves fast and continue learning for professional success.
Lastly week 3 discuss the integrity for CSUMB CS Online Code of Integrity. It is important to have integrity for both students and faculty members because it is the foundation of trust that we have to each other. It emphasize that work must be done by students that are part of the program. Rule 1 is that students should not submit a solution that is created by others. It is important to do this to avoid plagiarism of work. Second rule is that, in order to avoid others from submitting our work, we must also avoid sharing our solution code to other students. This helps lessen plagiarism within the cohort or group of students. There will be less plagiarist if no one encourages it. Lastly, students must indicate if they use AI for the submissions. It is important to cite the work of others which assisted us from out submission.
Overall week 3 discusses different dilemma in Computer science field, the important skills each student needs to learn and the integrity it must have. This fundamental knowledge will help me traverse through my future career and will guide me to make better decisions in the future.
